Legal Guidelines
So far the authorities in Germany only take action in exceptional cases.
Thus, the risks through increased radon concentrations in buildings are predominatntly in the responsibility of the property and real estate owners!
Till now, the assessment of radon concentration in the indoor air takes place with regards to the following recommendations and reference values:
1. German Radiation Protection Commission SSK
up to 250 Bq/m³ | no measures |
from 250 to 1.000 Bq/m³ | simple measures |
more than 1.000 Bq/m³ | redeveloping measures recommended |
more than 15.000 Bq/m³ | redeveloping as fast as possible |
|
|
2. European Commission
400 Bq/m³ | reference value of existing buildings |
200 Bq/m³ | planning value of new buildings |
|
|
3. International Radiation Protection Commission
600 Bq/m³ | maximum value for flats |
1.500 Bq/m³ | maximum value fpr workplaces |
|
|
4. US Environmental Protection Agency
150 Bq/m³ | reference value for residential buildings |
In the light of European legal guidelines these principles will also have to be implemented in Germany in the future.
The commission suggests the following maximum values for the annual average:
200Bq/m³ for new buildings, 400 Bq/m³ for existing flats and buildings with high public frequency and 1,000 Bq/m³ for workplaces and other public buildings.
